Your brand usually does not show up in ChatGPT answers for one of 3 reasons: AI crawlers cannot reach your site, no page answers the question completely, or the answer is buried below the opening lines.
You can check all three. Start with access, because nothing else matters if the bot is blocked, and test with questions a customer would ask without naming your brand.
Can AI Actually Reach Your Site?
Your brand cannot appear in ChatGPT search answers if OAI-SearchBot cannot crawl the page. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in search, while GPTBot relates to model training. If robots.txt disallows OAI-SearchBot, the site will not appear in search answers, although it may still appear as a navigational link, according to OpenAI's crawler documentation.
- robots.txt: explicitly allow OAI-SearchBot.
- Server and CDN: confirm the host accepts requests from OpenAI's published IP addresses. Changing robots.txt will not help if the server blocks the request.
OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to take effect, so a same-day retest proves little.
Grimpe's Access tests each AI bot with real requests, names the cause of a block, and generates the robots.txt you need. See Which AI Bots Should You Allow in Robots.txt?.
Does a Page Exist for That Question?
Your brand needs a page that answers the question a customer asks. A product page is not always an answer page. If your site has never addressed the question, ChatGPT has nothing of yours to cite, however strong the rest of the domain is.
Grimpe's Citations shows one row per prompt and one column per engine, and names the site cited instead of you, so you can see which questions you are losing. When you have no page for one, Create writes it from your own material.
Does Your Page Fully Answer the Question?
We tested how much this matters. In a Grimpe test on one page, the version holding the real answer was cited in 3 of 3 runs, and a same-length version with unrelated facts in 0 of 3. A complete answer is necessary, but it does not guarantee a citation.
What counts as complete depends on the page type:
- A sales page states the offer, audience, and terms.
- A comparison page applies the same criteria to every option.
- An informational page gives measured results and method.
- A reference page gives numbered steps.
A good Google rank will not cover for a missing answer. Ahrefs studied 15,000 long-tail prompts, with data from early July 2025, and found that only about 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot also appeared in Google's top 10 for the same prompt.
Grimpe's Rewrite fills in the missing answer and rebuilds the page, keeping your meaning, terminology, and data, and returns the finished page.
Is the Answer Buried?
AI does not always read a whole page. It can judge a page by a short preview of the headline and opening lines. If the answer sits three paragraphs below a long introduction, it may never be seen.
Grimpe's AI Preview shows the headline and opening lines ChatGPT reads first and where reading is predicted to stop. To aim a page at one question, use Prompt-Specific Optimization. See What Does ChatGPT Actually Read From a Web Page?.
Are You Testing With the Right Prompts?
Asking about your brand by name measures whether ChatGPT knows the name, not whether a stranger would find you. Test real customer questions without your brand in them.
Run them more than once. A SparkToro study reported by Search Engine Journal covered 2,961 prompts and found under a 1-in-100 chance of the same brand list appearing in two runs of ChatGPT or Google AI. Visibility across many runs was more stable than any single position.
Grimpe's Visibility Dashboard sends every tracked prompt to every selected engine and shows how often you are cited. Simulate shows which pages an engine found, read, and cited, so you can see whether you lost at access, at reading, or at the citation. See How to Measure Brand Visibility in AI Search.
How to Do This in Grimpe
- Run Access to confirm OAI-SearchBot can reach your pages.
- Check Citations to see which prompts you are losing and who is cited instead.
- Open AI Preview to see what ChatGPT reads first on those pages.
- Fix the page with Rewrite, or write the missing one with Create.
- Test the result with Simulate before publishing.
- Compare runs in Citations after you publish, next to pages you did not touch.
