How to Measure Brand Visibility in AI Search

Brand visibility in AI search is the share of repeated prompt runs in which AI answers cite your brand or pages, measured per engine and compared with the sites cited instead.

One answer is a sample, not a measurement, because answers change between runs. Measure the rate over repeated runs, and keep visits and impressions as separate numbers.

Track Citation Rate Across Repeated Runs

  1. Pick brandless prompts. Write them the way a customer would ask, without your company name. A prompt with your name measures recall, not whether a stranger can find you.
  2. Run each prompt several times on each engine. A SparkToro study reported by Search Engine Journal covered 2,961 prompts and found under a 1-in-100 chance of the same brand list appearing in two runs of ChatGPT or Google AI.
  3. Record the rate. Citation rate is cited runs divided by total runs. If you are cited in 4 of 10 runs, your rate for that prompt and engine is 40%.
  4. Repeat on a schedule, with the same prompts and engines, so periods compare fairly.

Grimpe's Visibility Dashboard sends every tracked prompt to every selected engine on each run and shows how often you are cited. See How to Track AI Visibility Across Multiple Domains.

Calculate Share of Voice Against Real Competitors

  1. List who actually gets cited. Your real competitors in AI answers are often not the ones in your sales deck, so pull the cited domains for your prompts.
  2. Divide your citations by all citations across the prompt set. That is your share of voice.
  3. Do not assume Google tells you this. Ahrefs studied 15,000 long-tail prompts and found about 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot also appeared in Google's top 10 for the same prompt, and 28.6% for Perplexity. Ahrefs published this in August 2025 with data from early July 2025.

Grimpe's Citations shows one row per prompt and one column per engine, names the site cited instead of you, and links each result to the real answer. You can export the grid for reports. See Why Doesn't My Brand Show Up in ChatGPT Answers?.

See Which Pages Get Cited

Record the page behind every citation. A page that earns citations shows what works. A related page that never does shows where to act.

That is where measuring has to turn into work. Rewrite rebuilds the page you are losing with, keeping your meaning, terminology, and data, and Simulate tests it before you publish. See How to Rewrite a Page for AI Citations.

Pull Data From Free Official Reports

Two official reports add partial views.

  • Bing Webmaster Tools. Its AI Performance report, launched as a public preview in February 2026, shows total citations, average cited pages per day, grounding queries, and page-level citations across Microsoft Copilot and AI summaries in Bing. Bing says its grounding query data is a sample.
  • Google Search Console. Its generative AI performance report shows organic impressions from Search generative AI features by page, country, device, and date. Impressions are not citations, and the report can be empty for a site with few of them.

Neither replaces repeated testing on the engines your customers use.

Keep AI Visits Separate

Read visits from AI assistants apart from your other channels, next to citation rate for each page. A page can be cited without earning a click.

Grimpe's Traffic reads Google Analytics 4 with read-only access and shows AI visits by assistant and by page.

Avoid Misleading Numbers

  1. Never judge a change from one run. Answers vary too much for that.
  2. Compare changed pages with untouched pages, on the same prompts and engines. If both groups move together, the engine may have changed, not your page. See How an SEO Agency Can Offer GEO.
  3. Do not treat readiness scores as results. A score tells you how ready a page is. Only real answers show whether it gets cited.

How to Do This in Grimpe

  1. Add your brandless prompts to the Prompts library, and choose your engines.
  2. Run monitoring. Every prompt goes to every selected engine.
  3. Read citation rate and comparisons in the Visibility Dashboard.
  4. Open Citations to see the real answers behind each number.
  5. Connect GA4 to see AI assistant visits in Traffic.
  6. Send the prompts you are losing to Rewrite, then compare runs next to untouched pages.
