What's the Difference Between AEO and GEO?

The difference between AEO and GEO is mainly the label: GEO is the 2024 research term, AEO is an industry one, and both mean getting your content used inside AI answers.

Treat them as one discipline. The methods overlap almost completely, and the outcome that matters is the same: whether an answer cites your page.

What GEO Means

GEO comes from the paper by Aggarwal et al., presented at KDD 2024. It treats generative engines as different from classic search, because they write one answer from several sources. The paper's GEO-bench benchmark tested strategies across domains and found that GEO methods can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses, with results that vary by domain.

What AEO Means

AEO describes shaping content so a system uses it as the direct answer instead of only linking to it. We found no single source for who coined it, so vendors use it loosely. It can cover AI assistants and classic featured answers alike, and it pushes teams toward clear question-and-answer structure, which helps under any label.

Our Position

We do not split the work by acronym, because the page does not know which label you used. In Grimpe, the same steps apply: let AI bots in, answer the question completely, put the answer first, and measure real answers. See GEO Tools vs. AI Writing Tools.

We test this directly. In a Grimpe test on one page, the version holding the real answer was cited in 3 of 3 runs, and a same-length version with unrelated facts in 0 of 3. A complete answer is necessary, but it does not guarantee a citation.

Why Both Still Depend on SEO

Google's guidance says SEO best practices remain relevant, because its generative AI features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google also says making pages primarily to manipulate generative AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy.

Google also says you do not need special writing, llms.txt, or special markup for its AI features. That is about Google Search, and we agree with it there. Our Rewrite does not swap words for AI: it fills in the missing answer and moves it up. llms.txt is a low-cost map for other assistants whose citation effect nobody has shown, and structured data makes a page clearer without promising citations. See What Is llms.txt?.

What to Do Under Either Label

  1. Make sure the page is reachable. Access tests each AI bot with real requests and names the cause of a block.
  2. Answer the question completely. The AI Readiness Score rates each tracked page from 0 to 100 and lists the weakest first, and Rewrite rebuilds a page while keeping your meaning, terminology, and data.
  3. Put the answer first. AI Preview shows the headline and opening lines ChatGPT reads first and where reading is predicted to stop.
  4. Test before publishing. Simulate shows which pages a real AI engine found, read, and cited. In a 455-run test battery, it agreed with a real AI engine on which pages get cited 96% of the time. That is our own measurement, not a customer result.
  5. Measure real answers. Citations has one row per prompt and one column per engine, each linked to the real answer.

How to Do This in Grimpe

  1. Run Access and fix any blocks.
  2. Find the weakest pages with the AI Readiness Score.
  3. See what ChatGPT reads first in AI Preview.
  4. Aim the page at the exact question with Prompt-Specific Optimization.
  5. Test it with Simulate, and keep every version in History.
  6. Track citations in the Visibility Dashboard and Citations, and AI assistant visits in Traffic.
