How to Optimize a Page for Perplexity Citations

Optimizing a page for Perplexity citations takes 5 steps: let PerplexityBot reach it, pick one question, put the answer at the top, use sourced facts, and test the question repeatedly.

Perplexity has not published a checklist for getting cited, so treat these steps as good practice and not as Perplexity's rules. One more thing to be plain about: Grimpe's rules are measured on ChatGPT, not on Perplexity, so test any result here on Perplexity itself.

Step 1: Confirm PerplexityBot Can Reach Your Page

Perplexity uses two user agents. According to Perplexity's documentation, PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Perplexity-User supports live user actions and generally ignores robots.txt rules, since a user requested the fetch.

  1. Check robots.txt. Allow PerplexityBot. Perplexity recommends this so your site can appear in search results.
  2. Check your firewall separately. A Web Application Firewall such as Cloudflare or AWS WAF can block a bot even when robots.txt permits it. Rule order matters: in AWS WAF, allow rules need lower priority numbers than blocking rules.
  3. Verify with real requests. Match the user agent together with Perplexity's published IP ranges, and do not assume robots.txt alone is enough. Changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect.

Grimpe's Access tests each AI bot with real requests, names the cause of a block, and generates the robots.txt you need. See Which AI Bots Should You Allow in Robots.txt?.

Step 2: Pick One Question and Answer It Completely

A broad page that never states a direct answer gives an engine little to use. Choose the one question a buyer would actually ask, and answer it fully with concrete facts and named sources.

We tested how much a complete answer matters on ChatGPT. In a Grimpe test on one page, the version holding the real answer was cited in 3 of 3 runs, and a same-length version with unrelated facts in 0 of 3. We have not run this test on Perplexity.

Grimpe's Prompt-Specific Optimization aims a page at one question, and Rewrite rebuilds it while keeping your meaning, terminology, and data. If you have no page for the question, Create writes it from your material. See How to Rewrite a Page for AI Citations.

Step 3: Put the Answer at the Top

Put the direct answer first, then the supporting detail. Match the opening to the page type:

  1. Sales page: state the offer, audience, and terms.
  2. Comparison: apply the same criteria to each option.
  3. Informational page: lead with measured results and method.
  4. Reference page: lead with numbered steps.

Grimpe's AI Preview shows the headline and opening lines ChatGPT reads first. It is a ChatGPT prediction, and a quick way to catch an opening that hides the answer.

Step 4: Use Specific, Sourced Facts

Perplexity describes every answer as coming with clickable citations, so name your sources and keep figures checkable.

Perplexity also rates sources at the site level. Its help center says it rates the whole website a source comes from, not each page, and that a reviewed domain can carry a Government, Academic, or Trusted label. The review checks questions such as whether a site corrects its mistakes and says who wrote each piece. Most domains have no label, and Perplexity says that is not a negative judgment.

Google rank is a weak guide to any of this. Ahrefs studied 15,000 long-tail prompts and found that 28.6% of Perplexity's cited links also appeared in Google's top 10 for the same prompt, compared with about 12% for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. Ahrefs notes that Perplexity runs its own search index, and that the data dates from early July 2025 and may have changed. See Do AI Search Engines Look Beyond the Top 10?.

Step 5: Test the Same Question Repeatedly

A single citation shows a page can be picked once, not that it will be picked reliably. Run the same question several times, and keep untouched pages so you can compare whether a change made the difference.

Grimpe's Citations shows one row per prompt and one column per engine, including Perplexity on plans that include it, with each result linked to the real answer. Simulate tests a live page, a rewrite, or a draft before you publish, and History keeps every run.

How to Do This in Grimpe

  1. Test PerplexityBot with Access and fix any block.
  2. Find your weakest pages with the AI Readiness Score.
  3. Rebuild the page with Rewrite, aimed at one question with Prompt-Specific Optimization, or write it with Create.
  4. Test it with Simulate before publishing.
  5. Track the real answers in Citations and the Visibility Dashboard.
